Thanks to the many readers and Gorey fans who came to Boom-Books author Carol Verburg's talk and book signing June 9 at the Edward Gorey House in Yarmouthport, MA. Verburg and Gorey were friends, neighbors, and collaborators throughout the 1990s, staging plays from Bourne to Provincetown. Read about their theatrical adventures in Edward Gorey Plays Cape Cod. And for fictional fun, enjoy Croaked: an Edgar Rowdey Cape Cod Mystery. (See details on this page)

In addition to being the author of Croaked: an Edgar Rowdey Mystery and Edward Gorey Plays Cape Cod (Boom-Books), I'm also the happy author of Spin, or, Twilight of the Bohemians — winner of this year's Ashland [Oregon] New Play Festival. If you're planning to catch the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, go in October, and along with Ghost Light and August: Osage County you can see Spin, too! Exact dates and times at www.ashlandnewplays.org

But first: Starting September 14, I'll be teaching Introduction to Self-Publishing at San Francisco's Mechanics' Institute Library, 57 Post Street, on alternate Wednesday nights, 5:15-6:15. The class will cover the basics to help authors answer the key questions: Am I the best publisher for my own book? and How do I start? Details at www.milibrary.org

Next: Booktoberfest! Come hoist a stein on Wednesday evening, October 5, as the Mechanics' Institute Library launches its first annual celebration of local beers, booksellers, and writers. The locavore movement isn't just for food! Right here in San Francisco you can discover the hottest new books: pick one up in print or download it to your iPad, Kindle, or cell phone.

And don't miss: Along with other Bay Area indie publishers, I'll be appearing on a panel: Indie Publishing:
Is Self-Publishing the New Black?
Join us at 3 PM Saturday, October 8 at the Variety Preview Room Theatre (The Hobart Bldg), 582 Market St.
